SBEC currently has three openings at our Fields Store, TX office. Positions may be filled at any of the following classification levels based on qualifications and experience:

  • 2nd Class Line Technician Apprentice
  • 1st Class Line Technician Apprentice
  • 2nd Class Line Technician
  • 1st Class Line Technician

Overview:

The Line Technician performs a variety of duties involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution lines in both energized and de-energized states. Work may include climbing poles and/or operating bucket trucks while installing transformers, capacitors, regulators, and other line equipment.

This position requires adherence to all Cooperative policies and applicable regulations, including NEC, NESC, REA, OSHA, and state requirements. Employees are expected to develop and demonstrate a working knowledge of the Cooperative’s system, as well as the tools and equipment used in line work, with proficiency increasing based on experience level.

 

Essential duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Installs, removes and relocates transformers, service drops, circuit breakers, conductors, capacitors, regulators and other line equipment as needed
  • Installs underground lines, pad mount transformers and other URD equipment as assigned
  • Cut trees and brush as necessary to clear right-of-way using chainsaws, machetes, etc.
  • Shall assume a place in the duty rotation, climb poles and/or operate bucket trucks as necessary to perform work on lines
  • Fills out documentation on installed equipment including name of equipment, job number, serial number, location, etc. as directed by supervisor
  • Completes time sheets, mileage/gas tickets and other required forms
  • Fill out inspection sheets with documentation of work to be done on equipment
  • Follows daily or monthly inspection schedules for bucket truck, digger truck, and other Cooperative equipment
  • Maintains stock, checks out and loads material onto trucks
  • Operates hydraulic or manual tamp when backfilling dirt around poles
  • Actions can have a direct bearing on the safety of the crew and public as well as the successful completion of the job and continuity of service in the system
  • Responsible for the proper care, use, installation and maintenance of expensive equipment
  • Shall be competent in pole top rescue, bucket truck rescue, and lock out tag out procedures
  • Ensure that all safety precautions and procedures and rules are followed
  • Follows Cooperative, NESC, NEC, REA, OSHA, and state and other regulatory agency procedures and rules in the performance of all work
  • Attends regularly scheduled safety meetings
  • Wears rubber gloves, rubber sleeves, hard hat, goggles, safety glasses, proper work attire, and other required protective equipment such as a harness or lanyard
  • Maintains own tools and Cooperative's tools and equipment in good working order
  • Works outdoors 95% of the time in all types of weather conditions and environmental conditions such as holes in the ground, fallen branches, rough terrain, heavy underbrush or swollen streams

 

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid Texas driver’s license required; ability to obtain and maintain a Texas Class A CDL within established timeframe
  • Ability to successfully complete required Cooperative training and safety certifications
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn electric distribution system construction, maintenance, and safety procedures
  • Ability to read and follow Cooperative maps, work orders, staking sheets, switching orders, safety manuals, and related forms
  • Ability to respond to emergency callouts and work irregular hours as required
  • Ability to perform essential job functions safely and effectively

 

 Preferred qualifications:

  • Valid Texas Class A CDL
  • Previous electric utility or line work experience
  • Completion of recognized Lineworker or hotline training programs
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR/AED
  • Experience with pole-top rescue, bucket truck rescue, and lock out/tag out procedures
  • Experience troubleshooting overhead and underground distribution systems
  • Familiarity with transmission switching procedures and utility safety practices

 

Physical demands include but are not limited to:

  • Standing: 45%

  • Sitting: 10-20%
  • Lifting and Carrying: up to 50LBS
  • Pushing and Pulling: up to 75LBS
  • Climbs a pole with belt, equipment and/or hand tools weighing 40-50 pounds
  • Works at heights up to 100ft above ground

Hourly range: $26.00 - $54.55; depending on classification, qualifications, and experience
