If you work in a corporate world, you are probably in the process of wrapping up your budgets for next year. Your cooperative is no different - other than I have already given the “OK” to submit our budget to the Board for approval. If approved, one item budgeted will be to replace the metering systems used to read your meters.
San Bernard Electric Cooperative was one of the first in the state (and nation) to implement AMR (Automated Meter Reading). While we have enjoyed this capability for some time, the systems we use are now outdated and in need of replacement. In a way this makes me sad because I was in charge of implementing the initial system back in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Over time we supplemented the original system with another that could read some of the meters the first system couldn’t. The use of two systems gave us the resources to not be held captive by either in case one decided to raise the cost. Both systems lead us into a new era of doing business. It was the forethought used by my predecessor, John Adams, and the Board at that time that made San Bernard Electric a leader in this new technology.

Once again, your cooperative will be a pioneer in this new technology - not that it is my intention to be this leader. It just so happens that our current systems have reached the point where there is not enough support for the manufacturers to keep them going. These manufacturers are looking ahead and focusing their resources on today’s technology. Hopefully this new technology will grant a long life to our new equipment.

We have a pilot project currently underway as we evaluate a metering system that we think will work best for us. If we continue to have the type of success we have had initially, I suspect that we will begin changing out meters at the first of the year. A new system will also bring updated capabilities for our membership and I will continue to keep you posted on any new developments.

One more thing I would like to mention before closing is to let you know about several Energy Efficiency Workshops that San Bernard Electric Cooperative will be hosting for our membership. These workshops will benefit anyone looking to curb their electrical usage. We hosted one of these workshops in Bellville last year and had enough members participate that we decided to make it available throughout our service territory. We have an ad posted in this issue of the magazine with the details and I would suggest you circle these dates on your calendar and make plans to attend one of these meetings.

Until next time-take care.
