How do I connect to the Internet?
First, you need to install the software. It is on the CD provided by San Bernard Electric Cooperative. An Internet dialer is automatically installed during the set-up process. You will only install the software one time. Once the software is installed, click on the dialer to connect.

How do I disconnect from the Internet?
Disconnecting is very similar to connecting. You click on the disconnect button on your dialer to disconnect, just as you clicked on the connect button to connect. Please wait for verification that you are disconnected before you close your program.

What browser is a software program that gives you the ability to surf the World Wide Web (WWW)?
It allows you to find files saved on remote computers. The browser opens these files, called "pages", and displays the information. Two popular browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

Will I experience busy signals?
At times, you may experience a busy signal. We work hard to eliminate busy signals, but unfortunately they do occur. You get a busy signal if too many people are trying to connect to the Internet using the same phone number at the same time. San Bernard Electric Cooperative has a large number of dial-up Internet access numbers to help eleviate this problem. More numbers mean fewer busy signals for our customers.

How do I download a program or file?
Downloading is a common way to acquire computer software. The files are transferred from the Internet to your computer. To download, connect to the Internet and find a website offering the software you would like to have. Most sites are clearly marked with a download button. You will click the button and the software will be sent to your computer. Please note, not all software downloads are free. If a cost is involved, it will be marked.

What is a plug-in?
A plug-in is a piece of software that is added to your Web browser. It enables your browser to display information it can't open on its own. Many plug-ins can be downloaded off the Internet for no charge.

Does it matter how long I'm online?
No. The Internet service provided through San Bernard Electric Cooperative provides unlimited usage for $14.95 a month. It is a flat fee so you can use the service as much as you like.

How do I access a chat room?
There are several types of chat rooms. Some only require a web browser, but others require special chat software. Web-based chat was designed for beginners and only requires a browser. You can search for a chat room with a topic that interests you and just start talking. A more advanced type of chat is Internet Relay Chat (IRC). It requires a special program called "IRC Client."

How can I keep my children away from certain websites?
You can install a program that will block inappropriate material before it is viewed by a child or minor. There are several programs available on the market today.
